The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

I thought this film was going to be a spaghetti Western with the typical shootouts and gunslinging, gungho action. But WOW I was wrong. The Western setting is just used as a backdrop for a psychoanalytical look into the mind of the notorious outlaw as his past catches up with him. He becomes more and more paranoid about the law finding him and punishing him for his past crimes, resulting in an extreme distrust of others and erratic behavior around those he used to be close with. On the other hand is Robert Ford, who is a nobody, belittled by everyone and looked down upon because of both his age and his obsessive nature. His extensive collection of dime novels that glorify Jesse James and his exhaustive knowledge of every aspect of James’ life gives way to some homosexual undertones.
